You can mix a suitable barley grass powder into a cold smoothie with fruit, plain yoghurt or a plant drink you tolerate. Use no more than the product's labelled serving, count it towards your daily amount and choose ingredients that fit your dietary needs. A green colour does not make a smoothie a complete meal.
Banana softens the taste of a green powder; cucumber gives a lighter drink. These five combinations are recipe suggestions, not clinically tested formulas or promises of weight loss. Adjust the liquid for the texture you prefer.
Before you start blending
Check whether your product allows the preparation you have in mind. The BARLEYGREEN® Premium website recommends cold or room-temperature water and consuming the drink soon after preparation. [1] For a smoothie, also check the directions on your own pack.
The quantities below make one small drink each. Add only the powder amount appropriate under your label and existing daily routine. Trying several recipes on one day is not a reason to take several extra servings of powder.
Wash produce and use clean equipment. Select milk, yoghurt or plant alternatives that suit your allergies. Blend with the lid secured and keep utensils away from moving blades.
1. Banana and plain yoghurt
Use half a banana, 100 g of plain yoghurt and 100 ml of cold water. Add the appropriate amount of barley grass powder and blend until smooth. Add a little more water if you want a thinner drink.
Start here if you like a creamy drink. Use an unsweetened yoghurt you already enjoy, or a dairy-free alternative that suits your needs. Check the alternative's ingredients and nutrition separately.
2. Pear and cucumber
Blend half a ripe pear, about 50 g of cucumber and 150 ml of cold water with your powder. Remove the pear core first. Taste before adding anything sweet.
This combination makes a lighter drink than the yoghurt recipe. The ripeness of the pear will change its flavour, so treat the quantities as a starting point rather than a fixed promise of sweetness.
3. Mango and an unsweetened plant drink
Use about 80 g of mango with 150 ml of an unsweetened plant drink you tolerate. Blend with the appropriate powder amount. Add a few ice cubes if your blender is designed for ice.
Different plant drinks taste quite different. Pick one you already use, and check for allergens or added ingredients. The fruit and drink contribute to the final sugar and energy content; the powder does not cancel those out.
4. Apple, cucumber and mint
Blend half a cored apple, about 50 g of cucumber, a few washed mint leaves and 150 ml of cold water with the powder. Leave the apple peel on if you prefer and your blender handles it well.
Begin with just a little mint. You can add another leaf after tasting, but a strongly minty drink is harder to adjust. This recipe is intended as a flavour variation, not a detox drink.
5. Banana and oat breakfast smoothie
Blend half a banana, one tablespoon of rolled oats and 180 ml of cold milk or a suitable plant drink with the powder. Let the oats soften in the liquid first if that gives the texture you prefer.
If you require strict gluten avoidance, check the oats and powder for appropriate gluten-free information. Decide whether you need other breakfast food alongside the drink; the recipe is not a complete meal plan.
Can you prepare smoothies the night before?
Fresh preparation is a simple option. If you make a perishable smoothie ahead, refrigerate it promptly and follow the ingredients' storage instructions. USDA food-safety guidance limits unrefrigerated perishable food to two hours, or one hour above approximately 32°C. [2] A hot car or warm commute needs particular care.
For easier mornings, prepare your equipment in advance and keep ingredients stored appropriately until you blend. Make only what you plan to drink.
Frequently asked questions
Should I add honey?
Taste the fruit mixture first. If you add honey or another sweetener, count it as an added ingredient rather than assuming the drink is sugar-free.
Can I use hot milk?
These recipes use cold ingredients. Follow your powder's directions; BARLEYGREEN® recommends cold or room-temperature preparation. [1]
Can I use these recipes for weight loss?
They are flavour ideas. Weight management depends on your overall eating pattern and circumstances, not the presence of a green powder.
